How to find hiking partners in Durham

Durham has the Eno River in its backyard, more than 55 miles of trails along the Eno and Little Rivers, and a lot of people who'd hike more if they had someone to go with. Here's where to find them.

Updated November 2026

Hiking in Durham is easy. Finding someone to go with is not.

Eno River State Park alone has close to 30 miles of trails, and the Eno and Little River corridors have more than 55 miles when you add the city parks, Occoneechee Mountain and the Mountains-to-Sea Trail segment. What’s missing for a lot of people is company. Grad school schedules, shift work, and friends who are always “free next weekend” make it hard to lock in a hike.

There are two reliable fixes: show up to a group that already hikes on a schedule, or find a person or two who want the same trail you do. Both work well in Durham because the trails are close, popular, and easy to meet at.

An easy loop with river views. Pair it with Holden Mill (2.6 miles, two loops) if you both want more.

Between Mount Sinai Road and Whitfield Road

Gravel roads and footpaths through one of Duke Forest's largest divisions. Wide enough to walk side by side and talk.

Northern Durham and Orange counties · 7+ miles of hiking trails

Quieter than the Eno on busy weekends, with hiking trails separate from the mountain bike singletrack.
